    About

    Karen B. McLean Dade is a Professor of Secondary Education for the Woodring College of Education at Western Washington University. She received her Doctorate in Education from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst in 1994 with a specialization in Cultural Diversity and Curriculum Reform.

    Her area of research for the past 20 years has focused on the arts and combating racism in schools. She has authored such books as "Through Students' Eyes: Combating Racism in United States Schools," "Shattering the Denial: Protocols for the Classroom and Beyond," and "Divine N Promise: A Difficult Journey;" and has contributed to numerous chapters and journal publications. Dr. Dade is presently an Associate Editor for the IJME (International Journal for Multicultural Education), and serves on the WWU ACE Internationalization Lab Council.

    In 2001 Dr. Dade was nationally recognized as one of the leading new scholars of multicultural education during the "Passing the Torch" AERA (American Education Research Association) Presidential Session. Dr. Dade is also an internationally recognized scholar that has traveled to approximately 30 countries as a research scholar-in-residence and/or presenter in areas of social justice and anti-discrimination education reform. Some of her noted international work includes comparative antiracist education studies and the development of study abroad programs in South Africa, and non-discriminatory education transformation in India.
