Research Interests
Evolutionary ecology, genetics and genomics. Speciation and the evolutionary effects of hybridization. Evolutionary impacts of invasive species on native communities. My current study system are tephritid (true) fruit flies within the genus Rhagoletis (apple maggot and relatives) that are an excellent system for the study of how strong ecological selection can drive the formation of new animal species.
About Me
I am an Assistant Professor in Biology at Western Washington University and fill the “Ecological Genetics” position. I was born and raised in Germany and literally ran into my Ph.D. project while studying abroad at Penn State as an undergraduate. I did my Ph.D. and a first postdoc with Bruce McPheron at Penn State and another postdoc with Stewart Berlocher at the University of Illinois before coming to Western. I enjoy the outdoors and I am increasingly amazed by the diversity of nature.
